Children’s Rights

At Highsmith Law Firm, we believe that your legal rights are important, but the Children should always be the first priority… both for you and for us.

We encourage you to READ and AGREE that your child has these rights.

We encourage you to communicate these rights to your child and promise your child that you will respect these rights.

Finally, we encourage you to repeatedly reassure your child that this situation IS NOT THEIR FAULT.

Children’s Rights

Children, whose divorcing parents are involved in a custody dispute, should have the right:

  • NOT to be asked to choose sides
  • NOT to be told the nasty details of the legal proceedings
  • NOT to be told “bad things” about the other parent
  • NOT to be used as a messenger between parents
  • NOT to be asked to tell lies about the other parent
  • NOT to be a parent’s legal confidant
  • TO express their feelings and choose NOT to express certain feelings
  • TO be shielded from parental “warfare”
  • NOT to feel guilty for loving both parents
